The show report. TIM's Mobile Shop was successful again!
'Cause of network problems, unfortunately I could not update my blog during the days I was in London. There were too many people using the net, so the wireless connections as well as the GSM/UMTS connectivity was hard to use.
Anyway, I publish some lines about the event.
The Symbian Smartphone Show was held on 16 and 17 October in London, at Excel, one of the biggest congress centres in Europe.
I left from Palermo the day before, so I could get around my favourite city. It is always worthy of it! :)
What I was going to show was my last Flashlite application for TIM, the company I work for: Mobile Shop.
Mobile Shop specifications:
- Compatible with: any Symbian S60 2nd/3rd edition phone
- Flashlite 2.x player
- at least 1MB free memory
- GPRS/UMTS connection
This is a mobile purchasing application, that allows TIM's customers to access the whole products and services portfolio. The application is installed on the phone and can be accessed simply clicking on the icon created for it. The main menu presents the three main categories: Products, Services and Offers.
From there, the customer can select a brand (for ex: Nokia), a model (for ex: N76) and then read all the information he need about it: price, technical specifications, supported services and so on.
Then, he can even buy it, by credit card, so he has only to fill a form with his personal data and choose between home delivery or going to the closest shop to pick the product.
Here are some screenshots from the application.
Moreover, choosing from the other application's menu items, customers can know all TIM's offers details and information and even subscribe whichever they prefer.
For example, if they wish to download their favourite artist's Mp3 compilation or a ringtone, picture or wallpaper, they only have to do a couple of clicks!
In a couple of seconds, they will be sent the contents they chose, via SMS or MMS.
Mobile Shop can even allow users to change their price-plans, check balance, subscribe special offers they are always aknowledged. The last news and the best promotions are easily updated by clicking on the Update key, which starts an internet connection to TIM's server.
The connection used is completely free of charge, of course!
The philosophy underneath the Mobile Shop concept is giving users a new channel to access the TIM's world, better designed and accessible than the WAP Portal.
Flashlite 2 can grant:
- a more flexible interface, suitable to any screen size;
- a customizable look and feel
- animations and nice graphics
- remotely updatable contents
At this moment, somebody could say there are not so many Flashlite devices, but it is not so. All the new S60 Nokia phones and even S40 ones are Flashlite 2.0 embedded. But the the actual good news is that other brands such as Motorola, LG and Samsung started to produce Symbian/flashlite products this year... And at last 10 more devices are ready for the market!
The audience was very interested in the Flashlite theme. Besides us three more stands by Nokia/Symbian staff, were concerned about the Flashlite technology. Even Adobe itself and the Forum Nokia research group presented the new Flashlite 3 fantastic features, especially related to video streaming capabilities.
The new good point, that will surely add new interesting features to multimedia applications, is the possibility to link to FLV files (for example Youtube ones) and show them directly on the phone browser. This is also a new feature of the S60 FP2 devices. What else? Mobile internet is coming! Forget the past!
